What we do

From a 14kW Generac to a 150kW commercial unit.

PSPS shutoffs and aging PG&E infrastructure made standby power a core South Bay service. Monte Power & Electric handles the electrical scope end to end: load calc, ATS sizing, pad work, conduit and conductors, AHJ permit, and start-up commissioning. Gas-line work is coordinated with a licensed plumber on the same project.

Whole-home air-cooled units for residential, liquid-cooled standbys for larger homes and high-load properties, and 50kW to 150kW commercial standbys for restaurants, retail, medical offices, and small data scopes. Same crew on the panel, the ATS, and the commissioning, so the system actually transfers when the lights go out.

  • 10-150kW Sizing range, residential through light commercial.
  • 1-7 days Install window depending on scope and gas runs.
  • $2M General liability coverage on every job.

By generator type

Sized to the loads
you actually need backed up.

Generator sizing depends on whether you want the AC running, the EV charging, the well pumping, or just the fridge and a few circuits alive. Walk us through the property and the loads, and we'll spec the right unit.

01

Whole-home air-cooled

Most-common residential

Generac Guardian, Kohler 14RESA, Cummins QuietConnect class. 10kW to 26kW. Runs the AC, fridge, lights, internet, and most of a typical San Jose home through a PSPS event.

  • 10kW, 14kW, 18kW, 22kW, 26kW
  • Natural gas or propane
  • 200A automatic transfer switch
  • One to two day install
02

Residential liquid-cooled

High-load homes

For larger homes, multi-AC properties, EV charging, well pumps, or homes with shop space. 30kW to 60kW. Quieter run cycle and longer service intervals than air-cooled units.

  • 30kW, 36kW, 48kW, 60kW
  • Liquid-cooled engine
  • 400A or 600A ATS
  • Two to three day install
03

Light commercial

Restaurants, retail, medical

Restaurant kitchens, multi-tenant retail, medical and dental offices, small data scopes, and property management common areas. 50kW to 150kW with three-phase ATS.

  • 50kW, 80kW, 100kW, 150kW
  • Three-phase 208V or 480V
  • Service-entrance rated ATS
  • Three to seven day install
04

Automatic transfer switch

The piece that matters

The ATS is what actually senses utility loss, starts the generator, and transfers the load. Sizing, location, and service-entrance rating all matter. We size for the panel, not just the generator.

  • Service-entrance rated
  • 200A, 400A, 600A, 800A
  • Whole-house or essential-load
  • Cellular monitoring optional

Why South Bay homes add backup

PSPS, aging infrastructure, and electrification all push the same direction.

Backup power used to be a luxury. Today, between PG&E PSPS events, an aging South Bay grid, and homes that depend on electricity for heating, cooking, and transportation, it's closer to a baseline. The eight below are the reasons we hear most.

  • PSPS shutoffs hit the property every fire season
  • Heat pump heating means no gas furnace fallback during outages
  • Working from home with critical-uptime needs
  • Medical equipment that cannot lose power
  • Well or septic pump that keeps water flowing
  • EV charging as the family's only transportation
  • Refrigeration loss after a long outage already happened once
  • Insurance discount for whole-home backup power

How a generator install goes

Five steps from
quote to commissioning.

Same disciplined sequence whether the project is a 14kW Guardian or a 100kW commercial standby. The crew that designs the install runs the install and the start-up.

  1. 01

    Scope

On-site walk. Load calc, pad location, gas line review, AHJ check, and ATS sizing. No charge.

  2. 02

    Quote

Itemized quote with line items for generator, ATS, pad, electrical, gas-line coordination, permit, and commissioning.

  3. 03

    Permit & gas

Electrical permit pulled. Plumbing trade scheduled for gas-line stub or upsize. AHJ inspection coordinated.

  4. 04

    Install

Pad set, generator placed, ATS installed, conduit and conductors run. Gas plumbed and pressure tested by the licensed plumber.

  5. 05

    Commission

Start-up, transfer test, exercise schedule programmed, monitoring set up. Final inspection with the AHJ. Photos and warranty paperwork delivered.

Quick answers

Generator install
questions.

Six of the most-asked. More on the dedicated contact page or by phone.

  • What size generator do I need?
Most San Jose homes are sized between 14kW and 24kW depending on whether the AC, EV charger, and electric range run on backup. Commercial sizing is load-calc driven.
  • Do you install Generac, Kohler, and Cummins?
Yes. All three are installed regularly. Brand choice usually comes down to local service network, warranty terms, and what the customer's neighbor or property manager already runs.
  • Do I need a permit?
Yes. Standby generators require an electrical permit and often a separate plumbing or mechanical permit for the gas line. Monte Power & Electric handles the electrical permit and coordinates with a plumber on the gas side.
  • How long does install take?
A whole-home air-cooled unit with an existing gas stub takes one to two days. Larger commercial scopes with new gas runs and load-bank testing run three to seven days.
  • Where can the generator sit?
Setbacks are governed by NFPA 37 and local AHJ. Typical residential install needs 5 feet from windows, doors, and combustible walls. We confirm the pad location during the on-site walk.
  • Do you handle the gas line?
Monte Power & Electric handles the electrical install, ATS, and commissioning. Gas-line work is coordinated with a licensed plumber on the same project. We schedule both trades so the install lands on the same day.
